Continuous Car Insurance Coverage

Posted on in Auto Insurance

Continuous car insurance coverage refers to how long one has had on going insurance without a break (this may also be referred to as a  gap or lapse).  This is something to avoid because insurances companies will check for lapses and if a prospective policy holder has them it will be very difficult to get competitive premiums.   A lapse occurs because payment wasn’t made on the policy which can cause the insurance company to drop the policy holder.

Its important for a  policy holder if changing insurance companies to keep the older policy in effect until the new policy kicks in to avoid a break.  This situation is often referred to as a gap in coverage.  In auto insurance terminology this word gap has another use as well in what is called a gap rider.

Another reason to not let car insurance have a lapse in coverage is that the state may punish (this will vary by state)  with suspension of registration or even one’s drivers license.  This  is especially true if plates are not turned in right away.

In conclusion it is vital to maintain continuous coverage at all times even if its just a minimum liability auto insurance policy unless one plans on not driving anymore.
